Protein Overload

Most of the time many of us think when our hair is dry, brittle, and dull it is lacking something. There is a lack of moisture, or there is a lack of protein so then we deep condition with a protein treatment.

Protein is needed in your hair. Keratin is our natural protein that makes up our hair, skin and nails. If you don’t consume enough in your diet, hair loss can occur or hair can become dull and brittle.

When chemicals such as relaxers, hair dyes or heat appliances are used, the integral structure of the hair strands becomes damaged. The protein is stripped away and this is when protein needs to be added back into our hair to rebuild the strength of each hair follicle.

Protein overload can cause hair to experience the same breakage and brittleness as it would if you didn’t have enough. There is an imbalance of protein. The overload is when the levels of protection and moisture in your hair are not in balance. You can develop too much protein in your hair if you continuously overuse protein-rich hair products.

Hair in protein overload symptoms are:

• No elasticity, when you pull a strand of hair and instead of stretching it snaps and breaks off

• Hair will feel dry, brittle and stringy, because it won’t have enough moisture to stretch and support elasticity

• Hair will lose shine and look dull

• More frizz than normal, a wiry, stringy type of frizz

• You may notice additional shedding, due to the hair breaking when brushing

So if you are always getting the same results from your hair care products its time to change up.

Stay away from:

Protein based deep conditioners

Rice water treatments

In labels look for and don't use if it contains:

Keratin

Soy Protein

Biotin

Coconut

Just like with the body too much of anything, if consumed is not good for you.

Do note that finding out your hair porosity and learning your hair will help guide you in how many protein-rich products you should keep into your routine.
